How important was it for you to get feedback from a professional in the field that has gone through some of the same creative challenges as you?

My plan is to work with the notes I was given to consider ways to resinate the script. One of the many things I have taken away from the first day of the Sundance Screenwriters Lab is that I have to take ownership of the characters who populate this story—even this story based on true events and real people.

We talked a lot about character, world, and theme. I was especially struck by the connection my advisors felt with the main character, Mamie Till-Mobleyand the advice I was given to develop her and her motivation to a level that will result in quite a powerful rendering. The application for the January Screenwriters Lab is currently open with a deadline of May 3. My advisors have indicated an interest in staying in touch on resonatr, so that ongoing conversation will be great.
